The Artist’s Way

Almost six months ago I started reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.  She is a big advocate and even insists on a daily practice she calls Morning Pages.  This consists of three pages of stream of consciousness writing.  I must admit I’ve tried journaling in the past and never stuck to it as a daily practice.  In the past, I was too focused on selecting a specific topic to write about and it stifled my ability and desire to write.  I started one journal with a page each day starting with a topic related to a letter of the alphabet.  I think I made it to the letter “F.”

When I read Julia’s book and started following her guidance I unleashed my long-suppressed creativity. She’s a big advocate of the practice of Morning Pages.  Now each morning I get up and have a cup of coffee and write uncensored stream of consciousness writing for three pages in my journal.  This takes me about half an hour but sets the tone for the rest of the day and lets me “rest on the page” as she puts it.  I do have exceptions where I don’t start my day this way.  One is if I need to get out of the house first thing for an appointment.  Then, I will either write while commuting or while I’m waiting.

Dream Journal

When I have a vivid dream I want to capture.  I have a separate Dream Journal to record dreams (more on that later).  I have always been a vivid dreamer and want to see if I can identify any themes.  One other practice with the Morning Pages is to periodically go back and review for themes or actions.  My decision to start a website and a blog has been fueled by Morning Pages.   #morningpages, #creativepractice, #createfortoday, #createforhealing, #mycreativecommunity, #survivorandthriver
